As I was taking off the rhinestones and stilettos after a slow shift one night last week, I overheard one of my co-workers moaning “This stinks, I ONLY made $200 after tip out.” I glance up at Miss PrimaDonna and roll my eyes: she never shows up til 10pm, usually doesn’t start working the floor until 11-ish and is actually expecting to cover the $90 house fee plus the mandatory minimum tip-out to the DJ, house mom, and security staff about 4 hours on a Wednesday in slow season!

I was recently asked by one of my students who worked in a full-nude club if it might be a good idea to start working in a topless club owned by the same company in her city now that she turned 21 and was legally able to do so. Not knowing if there would be a difference, we decided it might be best to help all of our readers with the answer as it is a common question we receive.
Even if you’re a ‘veteran’ of the business, these are mistakes you need to avoid if you’re going to bank in tough times. Are you making any of these?

One of the questions I get asked most by new dancers is “How do you get almost every guy to say yes?” Although sometimes, like on a busy weekend night when there are more customers than dancers, it’s pretty easy to walk around and say, “Wanna Dance?” and someone is bound to say yes. Other times it’s not quite so easy. (More often in this economy, right?)

I get asked all the time, “How much money do strippers make?” Well, it varies from a good night to a bad night, but suppose a stripper only averages $200/shift and she works 4x a week. That is $800/week or $40k per year. If she works 5x a week that is $1000/week or $50k per year. When I first posted this article in the fall of 2007, most of the strippers I knew were averaging $500/shift, working 4 shifts a week, which translated to a 6 figure business.

- Decide why you are dancing. Is it for the money and power? The ability to be self employed? Do you have a shopping addiction that you need to support? Make sure that you know why you are thinking about getting into this business. It can be very taxing on the body and the mind. As dancers we see things in the clubs and hear things from men that may not always show everyone in the best light. Make sure you know that you can separate your life from your work. I started dancing mostly out of curiosity. I knew there was good money in it and I wanted to see what all the “hype” was about. If you are dancing just because of the money make sure you have the skills needed to make the money you want – and when I say skills I am talking about sales skills.

Question from Stripper School: Is the sales process something that you do to someone or you do for someone? If you feel the sales process is just some annoying, time-wasting, arm twisting process you have to walk a client through in order to get to VIP, then you are a manipulator. I’ll be the first to admit that manipulators make sales, but I have never known one manipulator who had long term success in the profession. Manipulative Strippers are the ones that give us a bad rap: they insinuate they will “do more” in VIP, they go shopping with and lead their sugar daddy customers to believe that they are “dating” them, and consequently their client relationships ultimately end with dramatic confrontations/restraining orders/lawsuits.

As you should know, you should always be in your Superstripper Zone when at work in order to maximize your earnings. But this doesn’t always happen. It can be hard to stay in the Zone all the time.
Many things can knock me out of my Zone. One of the worst offenders is getting turned down for dances multiple times. This just makes me feel bad about myself, and I’ll start thinking that the club is full of cheap losers. Another repeat offender is if the club is slow, or even empty. How can I hustle and make money when there is almost nobody there?

One of the major dangers to exotic dancers is drugs in the club. It can be very tempting to partake of the wide variety of drugs that make their way into the dressing rooms, bathrooms, and your drinks.
Since I have become a stripper, I have seen more drugs than I care to know about. I have seen girls doing coke out of compacts and off the toilet seats, seen girls smoking joints in the dressing room and at the smokers area, seen girls popping way too many pills, and even seen girls passed out in the bathroom or dressing room and having to be taken away in an ambulance. All this could be prevented if the dancers chose not to do them, or watched their stuff better.
